What Kind of Opponent Should You Be

In playing poker, one must expect to encounter different kinds of players and different atmospheres at the table. One must be able to discern the personality of each opponent in order to have some information that can be used when one goes against them one-to-one. And one should be able to identify the general atmosphere at the poker table so that one can decide wisely if one should enter a hand or not.

There are poker tables dominated by players who are loose with their money. They call bets but they rarely raise. Then, there are poker tables dominated by players who also don't mind losing money but they often raise just for sheer attention, even when they are holding flimsy hands. And then, there are poker tables dominated by players who are cautious with their money and this is why pot odds are small and showdowns are rare. From any of these tables, a wise poker player can make a profit.

However, there is a poker table that one should not join. Such a poker table is dominated by players who are cautious with their money but who will also bet aggressively when they get strong hands. These players are called "tight-aggressive". If one is new to the game of poker, he should avoid such tight-aggressive opponents. And if one finds himself in a table dominated by such players, then one should immediately get away before losing all the bankroll.

If one is already a tight-aggressive player, it may be a scintillating challenge to play against such good poker players. But to make a profit in poker, one should look for a poker table where one is the only tight-aggressive player.

To become a tight-aggressive player, one should not call bets when holding weak hands. Hoping for a great improvement at the flop is simply wishful thinking. This means that it is not necessary to play in all hands just to come out the overall winner of the whole poker session. In fact, such a player purposely does not enter all the hands, knowing that playing all hands is just a waste of money.

When the opportunity falls on such a player, that is, he gets a strong hand, then he plays aggressively. He bets and raises. And when someone makes the mistake of calling his bet, that someone simply sweetened the pot. The tight-aggressive player maximizes his win. In other words, when the tight-aggressive player wins the pot, he will be winning a fairly large amount of money.
