How To Play With Big Stack

Sometimes in tournaments you will see players start by winning huge pots during the early stages of the game and then shortly afterwards they begin to lose everything and are soon eliminated. Few players will consider this as bad luck, but what is the answer? Actually it is really quite simple.

Most inexperienced players with a heavy chip stack tend to lead at the start of the game and then relax and start to play like looser. It is then that they tend to take more risks thus, opening themselves to more losses. Soon they find themselves with no more chips and get kicked off of the table.

Usually, players with a lot of chips stay in too many hands; this is the first mistake that they make. Players will wager some chips to see a flop when they should have been doing some folding just because they can afford to bet more chips at the moment.

What players are thinking is that if they make their hand they'll be able to increase their lead at the table but if they don't it won't make a huge dent in their chip count. When players do this, the problem is that they are playing more hands that are unlikely to win. Their chip count will slowly deteriorate as the game pushes through as they go for long shot after long shot.

The problem with playing weaker hands is that even though one can make their hand; they still may not acquire the best hand.

Another huge pitfall is the player's tendency to call other players with shorter stacks of chips when they go all in. The taste blood and want to knock another player out think if they lose they will still have enough chips to proceed. This is very dangerous thinking.

Soon a player is calling hands they shouldn't and end up doubling up another player giving them new life at the table. Quite quickly the bull at the table has changed and the stronger player is the one leaving, not the weaker one who was watching their chip stack more carefully.

If players do not have good hand where they think they will win, then why call an all in? A good poker player should have patience especially when they have the lead chip count at the table. It is then that a good player will slow things down and slowly nibble away at the other players taking small bites from the remaining players, not huge chunks at a time.

As much as possible do not take uncalled risks, let other players battle for the remaining chips at the table, if you do this you are more likely to win the tournament.
